Samhain Turnip Lantern T-Shirt

Long before the pumpkin, Ireland carved turnips.

On Samhain night, when the veil between this world and the Otherworld grew thin, people in Ireland hollowed out turnips, cut grim faces into them and set a coal or candle inside to keep wandering spirits away from the door. When Irish emigrants brought the custom to America they found pumpkins easier to carve, and the jack-o'-lantern was born. This design brings back the original.

A snarling turnip lantern with its roots and leaves still on, framed by Celtic knotwork and triquetra knots, with SAMHAIN lettered below in an Insular-style script. Printed in earthy cream, olive and ember orange on black.
